It's all go again. Since the formation of MJB Data Limited I've been flat out and various pet-projects have had t be largely left to gathere dust. Over the years I've had quite a number of ideas for innovative online projects. Some have been original and others have been better ways of doing things already out there. Not many have developed into something that looks like a fully functioning website.
The Half Baked Ideas website is a home for these projects and is a half baked idea in its own right as it is built using a new CMS model.
CamWebDir
The half baked idea camwebdir.co.uk was set up a while ago as an experiment into automatic content retrieval - a mini crawler-based search engine. Other experiments had shown than by building robots that could force their way into sources of information unavailable to standard search engine robots it was possible to gather and publish lots of information that while in reality was 2nd hand appeared entirely original to Google and others and would therefore perform well.
In principle this method works but it seems better suited to specific sectors like jobs and property than general information or business listings. So, it has now reverted to a hand-edited online directory and events calendar. There is still scope to automate some of the events diary but I'm now focussing on good old fashioned prose -like this. I miss not tip-tapping away and spinning a line or two and recent experiments suggest that when it comes to attracting traffic you really just can't beat good old original and diverse copy.
I've also taken over editing my local Community Newsletter and rather fancy using the website to help produce it...
