Achieving high rankings in search engines has long been regarded as some kind of Voodoo. It isn't. Generally search engines have the same goal as the people who use them - to match a search query with the most relevant and authoritative online resources available.
Keyword research
Getting to the top of major search engines for things like "Your Company Name - Your Town" should happen by itself. The key to keywords is to identify the search terms used by people with a propensity to buy your products, register for your services, or some other meaningful and preferably measurable activity.
Natural/Organic strategies
Appearing in a search engine's primary search results, (as opposed to the sponsored links), can produce a constant stream of relevant referrals, free of charge. However, climbing to the top of an index for a particularly competitive search term can take a long time. Often, the best approach is to use keyword bidding in the short term and develop and implement a 'natural listings' strategy over time.
