As a Web developer it's very useful to have your own online projects that can be used as guinea-pigs, and over the years I've developed a number of websites for largely experimental purposes - some of which have become quite popular.

The main idea behind CamWebDir is to develop a cross between 1. a local searchable Wed directory for Cambridge, 2. a What's On guide and 3. a Wiki-widget - i.e. a website where people can find just about anything they need and that is built by anyone and everyone.

However, like all such websites it needs to reach a certain critical mass in terms of visitors before it will work by intself so before then it presents itself as an ideal opportunity to showcase ways of getting a website some traffic without spending a fortune on advertising.
